Annexure: Significant engineering achievementsin the last 10 years

1. Academic Programs:

M. Tech programs in Ocean Technology and management and Petroleum Engineering have been developed. The modernization of deep water wave basin, towing tank, three wave flumes and shallow water wave basin at the department of ocean engineering is completed and wave basin and long wave flume are being carried out in the Discovery Campus of IIT. International conference on drilling technology, workshops on man power development in petroleum engineering, water quality and management and retrofitting and rehabilitation of marine structures and short term refresher courses for port, navy and coast guard engineers have been organized.

The significant contributions as the member of the Executive Council in the development of Indian Maritime University from the inception are in formulating guidelines for recruitment, development of courses and School of Marine Design and Research ( SMDR ) in the Vizagapatnam campus, signing MOU with international maritime institutes on joint academic and training programmes in the areas of Port Management, Dredging etc.

The code on Port and Harbour structures, IS4651 Part I to IV has been revised incorporating the latest developments in analysis, design and construction.

2. Deep water Offshore Structures:

International projects on non-ship shaped FPSO and mobile offshore base and Innovative projects on classic SPAR for offshore wind energy and JACKET SPAR for integrated OTEC- desalination have been completed. The association with NIOT and NIWE include low temperature thermal desalination plants at six islands of Lakshadweep and LiDAR based Offshore Wind data collection platform at the mouth of Gulf of Khambhat near Pipavav.

3. Port Infrastructure:

The modernization and development of ports and ship yards, retrofitting and rehabilitation of berthing structures after earthquake and Tsunami are significant contributions in port sectorThe preparation of detailed project (DPR), EIA and EMP reports and presentation before the MOEF committee to obtain environment clearance for Cuddalore, Pondichery and other ports and green field ports in the state of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Orissa are contributions in port development.

The project management consultancy and design projects are

1.Offshore coal jetty with one of the longest approach and offshore breakwater for Tangedco at Udangudi

2.State of the art facilities for repair of submarines for Navy with guide pin arrangement, floating dock and covered shed for Navy. Indigenously developed first time in India

3.Floating jetty for Sea plane, fishing and passenger vessel built in Goa and Gujarat

4.Development of DPR for IWT in Orissa

5.Coastal protection with Geotube in Orissa and submerged reef in Pondichery commissioned for the first time in the world.

Jet grouting technique for soil stabilization, non destructive testing of marine structures, remaining life estimation, construction techniques and specifications using micro-concrete and construction chemicals and cathodic protection using impressed current etc have been developed.

The strengthening of existing berthing structures to receive bigger vessels have been carried out in Kandla, Chennai and Visakapatnam by providing the relieving platform on the rear side, stabilization of soil below the dredge level before deepening and removing the surcharge pressure below the existing structure. These techniques can be adopted without affecting the normal operation of the berth.

4. Sea water intake and outfall

The design and environment impact studies have been carried out for seawater intake and outfall systems for thermal and nuclear power plants. The major once through system projects of about 200,000 cum per hour capacity are designed for power plants at Chennai and Vizagapatnam.

5. Coastal Engineering:

The design methodologies for groyenes and geotube embankment have been developed and are being implemented as an effective coastal protection method in the state of Orissa. Rubble mound embankment with toe protection using flexible gabion boxes haven developed to protect NH in Raneswaram. The design of the navigation channel as per Supreme Court direction is carried out for Sethusamudram ship canal project.

The prestigious Ramseur award was received by the Chilika Development Authority for restoration of Chilika lake as a wetland, based on the technological intervention carried out by opening the new mouth, for which the field and numerical studies were coordinated. As a follow up systematic dredging and post monitoring studies are also being carried out.
